Make a batch of cupcakes with ballerinas dressed in glittery tutus for a ballerina-themed birthday celebration or other special event. The cupcakes are easy to make and require only a basic knowledge of cake decorating techniques. You can make the cupcakes up to 48 hours in advance of the special event to allow time for the fondant decorations to harden and to correct any errors made when decorating the cupcakes.

  1. 1

Prepare a batch of cupcake batter from a store-bought cake mix. Grease the bottom and sides of cupcake baking pans with vegetable shortening and sprinkle flour over the shortening. Pour the batter into the pans, making sure that each cupcake tin has approximately the same amount of batter. Bake the cupcakes and allow them to cool for 1 to 2 hours.

  2. 2

Place the cupcakes on a cake tray and cover each with a thin layer of buttercream icing.

  3. 3

Roll out a package of fondant, in a colour that coordinates with the party's colour scheme, to a thickness of approximately 1/8-inch. Use a round cookie cutter to cut out circles from the fondant, each circle a little bit larger than the cupcake top.

  4. 4

Place the circles onto a piece of foam padding and press the edges gently with a fondant ball tool every 1/2-inch to create waves in the edges of the fondant circles. You can depress the edges gently with the back of a teaspoon if you do not have a ball tool.

  5. 5

Layer each cupcake with three wavy fondant circles to make the ballerina's tutu.

  6. 6

Insert the miniature plastic doll figurine into the centre of the cupcake to her waist. Decorate her upper body with the buttercream icing in the same colour as the fondant to make the top of the ballerina's bodysuit.

  7. 7

Mix a little bit of lustre dust with three or four drops of lemon juice and paint the ballerina tutu for a shimmery skirt. Repeat for the remainder of the cupcake ballerinas.
