How to calculate a taper angle

Updated February 21, 2017

Taper angle is the amount of slope that is required for a structure, such as a ramp for handicapped access. This angle is used to determine the steepness of the ramp. To do this you need to find the measurements for certain variables. The known variables you will use are the height and length of the ramp. Once these are known, you can use arc-tangent to find the taper angle.

Measure the length of the ramp. For example, the ramp is 10 feet long.

Measure the height of the ramp. For example the ramp is one foot high.

Divide the height of the ramp by the length of the ramp. For example, 1/10= 0.10.

Take the arc-tangent of ramp height divided by ramp length using a calculator. For example, arctan(0.10) = 5.71. The taper angle of the ramp is 5.71 degrees.
