While Skype is typically used for video chatting and calling, you can also use Skype as an instant messaging service. When you appear in a friend's contact list, an avatar, or a picture that you've chosen, will appear beside your name. The same is true when you message a friend: your chosen photo will appear as your avatar in an instant messaging session. If you want to get rid of your avatar, it's a simple process that involves setting your avatar back to the default Skype icon.
