The most important part of a working slingshot is the pouch that holds the stone. The size of the pouch determines what size stone can be thrown. A large, well-shaped pouch will ensure that you can throw a variety of sizes of stones at targets from a variety of distances. Leather and faux leather make the best pouches.

  1. 1

Lay the piece of leather flat on a smooth surface. Outline the shape of the pouch onto the leather with chalk. A pouch shape will be its widest in the middle, gradually tapering to either side. Imagine a circle as the middle and a long oval as the two sides of the design. Make the inside 2 in. deep, the sides 1 in. deep and make the length of the pouch about 5 in.

  2. 2

Cut out the pouch with the scissors. Bore a hole at each end of the pouch with the awl about 1/2 in. from the edges, to prevent the leather from splitting. Make the hole large enough to fit the string through.

  3. 3

Make a 1/2 in. loop with a piece of leather string around each hole in the pouch. Cut the rubber string into two pieces, 12 to 18 in. long. Thread each rubber string through one of the loops and secure tightly with a knot. Attach the other end of the rubber strings to the sling shot base.
