Zippo brand lighters have a unique code on the bottom of the unit that can be translated into the date that the lighter was made. Zippo has been including this code on the bottom of their lighters for the over 50 years. Therefore, if you want to read the date on the bottom of your Zippo lighter to find out when it was made you simply need to figure out how to translate this code.

Turn over your Zippo lighter and write down the code located on the bottom. If your lighter was made in 2001 to 2011 this will be a letter A through L along with a number. If your lighter was made from 1986 to 2000 the code will contain similar letters as well as roman numerals. Lighters made prior to 1986 will display a series of dots or hash marks.
Match the markings on the bottom of your Zippo lighter to a Zippo lighter date sheet. For example, if your lighter has the letters A through L on the left side and the number "3" on the right side, find these figures in the date chart.
Read the number in the "Year" column on the date chart. For example, if your lighter has the letters A through L on the left side and the number "3" on the right side, this means that your Zippo was manufactured in the year 2003.
