Every cell phone and smartphone needs a subscriber identity module (SIM) card to connect to the cell network and function. Installing the SIM card in an Apple iPhone 3G is straightforward but you need to find the well hidden SIM card tray slot first. In the Apple iPhone 3G this is located in the casing along the top of the phone, and you can find it by looking for a tiny hole in the left-hand side of the casing. Once you've found the SIM card tray slot, open it with the SIM eject tool that came with your phone, or a paper clip, and insert the SIM card.

Things you need
- SIM eject tool or paper clip
Push the end of the SIM eject tool into the small hole in the iPhone casing. If you don't have the eject tool, bend the end of a paper clip to form a straight wire and use this instead.
Press the tool firmly into the hole until the SIM card tray ejects from the casing.
Pull the SIM card tray out of its slot.
Insert the SIM card into the tray, using the angled guide inside the tray to ensure the card is in the correct position.
Push the SIM card tray back into the slot. Do this carefully and avoid forcing the tray.
Wait for the SIM card to automatically register with the cell network. This usually takes only a few minutes. Once it does, the signal strength bar will display at the top of the iPhone screen. You can now make and receive calls and access the Internet.
Tips and warnings
- Avoid touching the metal contacts on the SIM card while installing it. Hold the card by the edges to avoid damaging the circuitry with your fingers.
