Callouts direct a viewer's attention to specific areas on a recorded screen in Camtasia video capture software. The Camtasia Studio software suite includes a library of callouts. It offers a variety of different shapes and colours as well as the ability to import custom callouts and add them to the library. Camtasia lets you add more than one callout to any sequence of frames.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Open the Camtasia Studio program and import your recorded project by clicking "File" and "Open Project." Find the project file on your computer and click the "Open" button. The "Clip Bin" window shows a thumbnail of your project.

  2. 2

Select the thumbnail of your project and click-drag it to the "Video 1" timeline, located at the bottom of the screen.

  3. 3

Click the "Callouts" button above the timeline, then click the scrollbar arrow in the window above the timeline. Different shapes of callouts display as you scroll. Find a callout you like and then stop.

  4. 4

Click and drag the "playhead" on the timeline to the location on your video recording where you want a callout. The window above the timeline and to your right displays the video frames in sync with the dragging of the playhead.

  5. 5

Click the callout shape you chose in Step 3 and the callout appears inside the video preview window. Click and drag the callout to any location you want inside the video. Grab the scale handles surrounding the callout and resize it if necessary.

  6. 6

Type text for the callout using the text field inside the left window. The text appears in the callout as you type. Change the text font and size using the drop-down arrows under "Text."

  7. 7

Click the "Border" button under "Shape" and select a different border colour for the callout if you like. Add additional effects by clicking the adjacent "Fill" and "Effects" buttons.

  8. 8

Add an additional callout by clicking another callout or creating a new callout of your own by importing an image into the "Clip Bin," using "File" and "Import media," and then right-clicking the image and selecting "Add as callout."

Tips and warnings

  • Edit any callout by simply double-clicking it on the timeline.
