Even in the dead of winter, the margarita evokes the warmth and sunshine of its native Mexico. These tropical drinks feature tequila and lime, with coarse salt on the rim of the cocktail glass nicely complementing these flavours. To add a festive touch to your margarita without changing the taste of your favourite recipe, rim your glasses with coloured salt.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Food colouring
  • Sealable plastic bag

  1. 1

Pour 6 tbsp margarita salt or kosher salt into the plastic bag. Margarita salt and kosher salt are coarse salts with similar tastes.

  2. 2

Add four drops of food colouring. You can use four drops of the same colour, or you can mix different colours together.

  3. 3

Seal the bag and give it a good shake. If the colour is not dark enough, add more food colouring, one drop at a time.

Tips and warnings

  • Moisten the rim of your cocktail glass with lime juice before applying the salt. The added moisture will help the salt stick to the glass.
