The third generation of the Amazon Kindle electronic reader, commonly called the "Kindle 3," was released in August 2010. This version of the Kindle, slightly smaller than its predecessor and offering more internal memory, quickly became the fastest-selling Kindle device to date. The Kindle 3 makes it very simple to browse, select and download books to your device. The only difficult part may be choosing books from more than 850,000 titles Amazon offered as of March 2011.

Instructions

    Add Books From Your Kindle

  1. 1

Power on your Kindle device and wait for the home screen to appear.

  2. 2

Click the "Menu" button on the right side of the screen.

  3. 3

Click the directional pad up one time to underline the "Turn Wireless On" option, or if your wireless is already on, you can skip this step and go on to the next. Press the centre of the directional pad one time to enable a wireless connection. Press the "Menu" button again.

  4. 4

Click the centre of the directional pad to select the "Shop in Kindle Store" option -- it's the second option on the "Menu" list. The "Shop in Kindle Store" option is underlined as the default option.

  5. 5

Click the centre of the directional pad to select the "Books" category when the Kindle storefront appears; this category is selected by default. Other categories that you can access using the directional pad are "Newspapers," "Magazines," "Kindle Singles" and "Blogs."

  6. 6

Click the directional pad to navigate the list of book categories. Press the centre of the directional pad when you find the category you'd like to browse.

  7. 7

Click the directional pad to navigate the book list that appears. Press the centre of the directional pad to select a book. This will load a description of the book as well as pricing.

  8. 8

Buy a book by highlighting the "Buy" button and clicking the centre of the directional pad. The book will be charged to your primary Amazon payment method. If you have Amazon gift cards on file, the purchase will be subtracted from the gift card. Otherwise, your purchase will be processed using the primary credit card you've designated.

  9. 9

Watch your screen for a confirmation that the book is being sent to your Kindle device. Wait for the download to finish.

  10. 10

Press the "Home" button to return to the Kindle main menu. Your new e-book will appear in the list of books on your home screen.

Click the "Kindle eBooks" tab at the top of the screen.

  4. 4

Click on one of the book categories to browse books in a specific category or enter the name or author of the book you are looking for in the search box.

  5. 5

Click the title of a book to see the book description, including the book price.

  6. 6

Click "Buy Now With 1-Click" to purchase the book. The purchase will be charged to your designated Amazon payment method. If you have gift cards on file, the book will be charged to that; otherwise, your book purchase will be charged to your credit card or designated payment method.

  7. 7

Power on your Kindle 3. Your new book purchase will appear on your home screen if wireless is enabled; if not, the book will appear the next time you turn on your wireless access.
