Ham and bean soup is a hearty soup enjoyed by many. Due to the main ingredients of this popular soup being high in salt content -- the ham, beans and broth -- it is likely that the soup will come out tasting more salty than desirable. Fortunately, there are some steps that you can follow to ensure that your ham and bean soup is less salty tasting.

  • Fresh vegetables
  • Homemade chicken stock

    Use fresh vegetables instead of canned vegetables, as canned vegetables usually contain extra sodium to preserve them. Create your chicken stock from scratch rather than using canned chicken stock, as that usually contains preservatives as well. Use low-sodium ham if possible.

    Add the required salt to the recipe slowly and allow it to simmer out.

    Peel a potato and cut into 1 inch cubes. Boil the cubes into the soup to absorb some of the salt.
