The open-source VLC media player can play almost any type of video or audio file format, meaning that the user only needs to have one media player on her computer. One type of file that VLC can play is a TS file, which is a transport steam video file that uses MPEG-2 encoding.

Download VLC from the VideoLAN website, if you do not already have the program. Install the program by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
Right-click on a TS file's icon. Select "Open With."
Click on the "VLC Media Player" icon in the list. VLC will open and begin to play the file automatically.
