ThinkVantage Connections, also known as ThinkVantage Access Connections, is an Internet connection utility found on IBM/ Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. The utility manages wireless Internet connections as well as local area network connections. ThinkVantage Connections is an alternative to Windows managing your computer's Internet connection and requires you to set up profiles for each connection you want the utility to manage. You do not have to use ThinkVantage Connections, and it is possible to disable the utility and use Windows to help manage and connect to the Internet.

    Place your computer's cursor on your ThinkPad's "System Tray" in the lower right-hand corner of your screen by the clock. Locate the icon containing the computer display with a pipe running under it --- this is the "ThinkVantage Access Connections" icon.

    Right-click the "ThinkVantage Access Connections" icon, and click "Modify WLAN Settings." Click the "Wireless settings" tab.

    Click the button next to "Use Windows to Configure Wireless Network." Click "Next."

    Click the button next to "Use saved user name and password" then enter or confirm your user name and password. Click "OK."

    Click "Close" to connect to your wireless or LAN connection.

Tips and warnings

  • The disabling process is immediate. If you decide later to change back to using ThinkVantage Connections, you can by completing the steps in this article and clicking the button next to "Use Access Connections to configure wireless authentication settings" in step 3.
