Refillable air fresheners offer a pleasant smell -- and the chance to swap it out for something else. You can also recycle the container. But we have to pay a price for this convenience. Air freshener refills are a specialised item, meaning that stores can charge a premium for them. This can make pleasant-scented air too costly for some.

Things you need
- Empty air freshener cartridge
- Flat knife
- Bottle scented oil
Take an empty or mostly empty air freshener cartridge. Use a sharp, flat knife to carefully separate the plastic nozzle from the glass lip of the bottle. Once you have a gap, pull it out and put it to one side. Wash the cartridge out so the old scent doesn't taint the new one.
Make sure before purchase that your scented oil can be heated with no ill effects.
Place the funnel in the mouth of the cartridge and pour in the scented oil. This will prevent the oil from spilling and ensure that you have control over how much is being poured. When the cartridge is almost full, pour a little bottled water down the funnel. This will wash any leftover oil into the cartridge.
Slide the plastic nozzle back into place when the cartridge is full. Push it back down so it sits flush with the lip of the bottle. Wipe your surfaces and the outside of the bottle with a damp cloth to remove any spilt oil. Put bottle back in the air freshener chassis. Turn it on and the new scent will be released.
