The delicate skin around the eyes is often first to show signs of stress, tiredness, poor nutrition and ageing. Being thinner than other areas, taking special care of this fragile skin should be a gentle process. Homemade eye creams, using only natural ingredients, can be a kind and effective alternative to expensive over-the-counter products that may contain irritating synthetic ingredients. Making your own eye creams is also fun and relatively easy to do.

Tips and warnings

  • Heat ingredients in a glass bowl over a saucepan of water if you don't have access to a double boiler.
  • Apply a small amount of eye cream nightly before bed, dabbing it around the eye socket and then blending gently without pulling the skin.
  • Perform a skin test on a small patch of hidden skin to test for sensitivity to any of the ingredients before applying to the eyes.
  • Never apply undiluted essential oils to the skin.
