The Safety 1st Secure Lock Bed Rail is a 12-inch high, 42-inch long -- extended -- foldable bed rail designed to help stop children old enough to use an adult mattress five- to 10-inches thick from falling out of bed while asleep. The bed rail has a mesh panel held in place with two metal and plastic side panels and arms that slide on feet between the mattress and box spring. Safety 1st designed the rail so that no tools are required for proper assembly and installation.

  1. 1

Hold the mesh panel in front of you by its short-sided ends with the logo at the top. Pull the ends in opposite directions until you hear or feel a click indicating that you've extended it completely.

  2. 2

Push the narrow end of a support rod into the hole on the side of one of the support arm feet until the locking pin pops up. Repeat with the other rod and foot. When finished, position the feet pointing toward you with the rods facing each other and then push the rods together until they lock.

  3. 3

Press the lower release button near the top of one of the feet and pull up on the support arm -- the area between the side panel and foot -- so that you can see the hinged elbow. Repeat this process on the other side. Push the panels to fold them down away from you at the elbows.

  4. 4

Flip the mesh panel so that the logo faces down, but remains at the top, and then slide its sides into the grooved channels on the side panels.

  1. 1

Pick up the assembled rail by its sides with the feet pointing away from you. Slide the feet under the mattress so that your child's shoulders will rest in line with one end of the rail -- at least 9-inches down from the headboard.

  2. 2

Push the upper release buttons and lift up the mesh panel until it locks in an upright position.

  3. 3

Grip an arm under a side panel and push down until the indicator line on the arm disappears. Repeat this process on the other arm. Pull up on the arms to confirm that you've secured them.

  4. 4

Grasp the handles on top of each side panel and push down until you only see the green lock symbol on the inside of the panels.

  5. 5

Press in on the rail to make certain that no gaps exist between it and the side of the bed.

  1. 1

Push the upper release button on one side, while pushing the rail forward slightly, and pull up on the panel. Repeat this process on the other panel.

  2. 2

Press the lower release button on one side, grasp the side panel handle and pull up to reveal the elbow. Repeat with the other panel.

  3. 3

Grasp both sides and fold the mesh panel back. Slide the rail from the bed and carry or store as needed.
