The ATI Radeon X550 is a PCI-Express card in the X5 series that features DirectX 9 support and 256MB of DDR 2 memory. To update the card, you must install the latest driver. As of March 15, 2011, the latest driver for the X5 series is version 10.2. The driver is available through the AMD/ATI's Catalyst software, AMD's proprietary system for updating older video cards. The Catalyst software includes the driver along with optional optimisation tools via the Catalyst Control Center.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Open the Support and Drivers webpage on the AMD website. Under the "Download Drivers" section, click the drop-down boxes and select "Radeon X5xxx Series." Select the operating system you're using (such as Windows XP) and click the "View Results" button.

  2. 2

Scroll down to the Downloads section and select the language you want the installation to be in. Click the "Download" button next to option 1 -- Catalyst Software Suite. Save the EXE file to the desktop.

  3. 3

Double-click the EXE file. Follow the onscreen installation instructions to complete the set-up. After the installation completes, restart your computer when prompted by the software. After the reboot, the Radeon X550 will be using the latest driver available.
