Condensed beef broth is made by boiling beef to extract its flavour and then straining out the meat. The broth is then boiled further to make its flavour more powerful, condensing it into a smaller amount of liquid. Beef consommé is an even further concentrated version of condensed beef broth. If you do not have the condensed beef broth a recipe calls for, you can substitute with the beef consommé you have on hand.
Divide the amount of condensed beef broth called for in the recipe by two. If the recipe calls for 6 cups of condensed beef broth, your result would be 3 cups. The result is the amount of beef consommé the recipe will use.
Pour the previously determined amount of beef consommé into a mixing bowl. Add an amount of water equal to the amount of beef consommé into the mixing bowl. Following the previous example, you would use 3 cups of beef consommé and 3 cups of water.
Stir the beef consommé and water with a spoon until the liquids combine thoroughly. This should take no more than 10 seconds.
Use the beef consommé and water mixture as you would the condensed beef broth in the recipe. The result using the consommé mixture will be indistinguishable from a dish made with condensed beef broth.
Keep any leftover consommé and water mixture in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks before discarding.
