When the sun is out and a light breeze is blowing, drying laundry on an outside line gives clothing a fresh scent and delicate feel. If you are camping or do not have a clothesline at your home, make one. A simple system of pulleys and rope, along with the device to hang it on, in this case a bent "spindle," will get your clothing up and drying in the sunny breeze in just a few minutes.

Tie two strands of nylon webbing into two loops with a water knot. A water knot is two overhand knots tied together. The end result will be two nylon loops used as the anchors to set the carabiner spindles and pulleys.

Use two trees or a pair of other stationary objects, 8 to 10 feet apart, to run the line between.

Wrap the nylon loops around a branch or pole and use a lanyard hitch to lock them onto the poles or branches. To make a lanyard hitch, loop the strap around the branch or pole then pass the strap's other end through the loop. If you are securing the line to a wall, screw in the hangers approximately 5 to 6 feet high along the wall with a screwdriver and wood screws.

Clip one carabiner into each nylon loop anchor. Clip the carabiners with their metal D-clips into the pulley retaining holes.

Thread the rope leading from one pulley to the next. Tie off one end of the rope to the tree or pole. Tie off the other side of the nylon cord where it can be easily reached and untied to raise or lower the line with clothing on it.

Pull down on one side of the rope to tighten the clothesline.

Things you need

  • Pair of poles, trees or hangers to attach the pulleys
  • 1-inch wide by 1-foot long nylon webbing (2)
