How to Bypass Passlock on a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina

Chevrolet is one of GM's auto brands. The 1999 Chevrolet Lumina was manufactured with a passlock theft deterrent system that locks-out your ignition to keep your car from being stolen. Many GM auto brands have this antitheft system built in; however, occasionally you may experience problems with it due to glitches. When the Chevrolet Lumina's passlock is not working properly, the security light will randomly illuminate on the dashboard, and you won't be able to start your vehicle. You can bypass the passlock on a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina to get it up and running.

    Insert the key in your Lumina's starter, attempt to start the vehicle as usual and let it stall. Once it stalls, leave the key in the "On" position. In other words, don't switch the key to the "Off" position. Your key in the "On" position when the lights on your car's dashboard are on and the A/C and radio can be used.

    Observe the "Theft Sys" light on your Lumina's dashboard and wait for it to stop blinking. This takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

    Turn the key immediately to start the car once the "Theft Sys" light is staying on steadily. Do not turn the key to the key to the "Off" position. This will bypass the passlock system for your Chevrolet Lumina and enable you to start it as usual.

Tips and warnings

  • If your Chevrolet Lumina keeps giving you passlock problems, it may be broken and you will need to have it replaced. You can also disable the passlock system permanently by taking it to a mechanic.
