You have just returned from a visit with friends or relatives. You stayed overnight or longer at their home. In addition to sharing their home, your hosts may have prepared a few meals for you, introduced you to their friends and arranged for sightseeing in their community. After unpacking and attending to personal details, sit down and write a thank you note to your gracious hosts. Write within a week of returning from your visit.

  1. 1

Use high-quality stationery or select an appropriate card. Write the note by hand.

  2. 2

Refer to specific moments during your visit. Reminisce about special events and meals at their home. For example, "We enjoyed the wonderful meals at your home. Paul loved the homemade lasagne that reminded him of his Italian grandmother's cooking" or "Sitting in the back seat of your van, we relaxed and enjoyed the scenery and beautiful fall foliage."

  3. 3

Thank your hosts for any extra efforts on your behalf. They may have given up a bed or accommodated special dietary concerns. For example, "Give my special thanks to Cheryl for giving up her bed. It was an unexpected treat to sleep in a beautiful bed with a canopy" or "Thank you for including a vegan dish at every meal. Pauline ate without complaining --- a rare event!"

  4. 4

End on a positive note and extend an invitation to visit your home. For example, "We were delightfully spoiled and came home refreshed and rejuvenated. We hope that you can visit us during the summer."
