Umbrellas are among the most common pieces of outdoor furniture. They offer shade and style in almost any climate, but can be prone to damage due to wind, sun and age. An umbrella canopy can be repaired by professionals or replaced altogether, but knowing some basic steps to re-cover an umbrella canopy can save time and money.

  • Fabric patching
  • Scissors
  • Clothes iron
  • Sewing needle
  • Nylon thread

    Re-covering an Umbrella Canopy with a Small Tear

    Remove the umbrella canopy and place it with the outer side up on a level surface.

  2. 2

    Hold the edges of the tear together and apply a fabric glue to the tear. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly according to manufacturer instructions.

    Replace the umbrella canopy.

    Re-covering an Umbrella Canopy with a Large Tear

    Remove the umbrella canopy and place it with the outer side up on a level surface.

    Cut a piece of fabric patching the size of the tear with a scissors.

    Place the cut piece of fabric patching over the tear. Some fabric patching has a self-bonding adhesive side, and some must be ironed on with a clothing iron.

    Sew the cut piece of fabric patching to the umbrella canopy with a needle and nylon thread. Sew around the entire edge of the cut piece of fabric patching.

  5. 5

    Replace the umbrella canopy.
