How do I Remove Baffles on a Mazda Rx8?

Updated February 21, 2017

An exhaust baffle is the cylinder at the end of an exhaust pipe the helps create a vehicle's exhaust noise. You can purchase baffles that are designed to be louder, or sound deeper, than the factory-installed exhaust system. If you want to change the exhaust tone of your Mazda Rx8 sports car you need to remove the old baffles first.

Start the Maxda Rx8 and let it run for a few minutes. The heat of the exhaust helps loosen the baffles as the metal expands.

Turn off the car before working on the baffles and put on your safety goggles and work gloves.

Remove the cap on the end of the exhaust tail pipe. This exposes a wider section of the tail pipe, including the baffle. The cap does not completely cover the end of the exhaust pipe but it compresses the exposed area, focusing the exhaust and tone created by the vehicle.

Drill out the rivets along the baffle holding it in the exhaust pipe. Do this by pushing the drill bit through the rivets until they pop out the other side.

Pull out the baffle with your pliers. Once removed, move to the second exhaust pipe and follow the same process to remove the second baffle.
