Instructions for How to Build a Walking Robot

Building a walking robot is no longer a project just for engineers -- anyone can build on by using one of the Lego robot kits on the market. These help you build and configure a robot to do what you want. Lego robots can be built to walk, turn, react to sound or light or can be custom-programmed to do specific actions you want. But if you specifically want a robot that walks, be sure to get a kit with walking capabilities. Once you put it together, you can program it through your computer to perform several different actions.

Sort all the Lego parts according to their function. Place moving pieces like pivots and hinges in a small plastic container. Place other like parts such as bricks in another container, wheels and axles in another. Continue separating and adding like pieces to their own containers.

Picture in your mind the robot you want to build. There are several variations to the robot you can assemble using the parts that came in the kit. Draw the type of walking robot you want, including the robot's walking factors and whether it will have two or four legs. You can make the body of the robot horizontal or vertical. Refer to the instruction manual for different build versions of the walking robot. The manual will give several versions to which you can adapt your own style.

Tape your handmade drawing or any instructional diagram that resembles the robot you want to build to your work table or to the wall in front of it. This way you have a sample diagram to follow.

Build a support box or frame for the robot computer. Place the computer in the support frame you made. Attach the robot computer device (packaged in the robot kit) to the robot in a central and secure location that will not interfere with the robot's walking function. The computer device must also be easily accessed and wired to the sensors that make the robot walk.

Construct the legs using pivots and Lego bricks. Add two legs in the correct position under the computer support box. Adding four legs is an option to give the robot moving stability. Refer to the instructions and your drawings for better reference in making either a two-legged or four-legged robot. Attach driving axles to the legs, allowing the computer device to move the legs in sequence.

Add a few sensors to the legs and other parts of the robot. Avoid using all the sensors that come in the kit, as you can make more than one robot using one kit, and different sensors will make your computer do different things. Place movement sensors on the robot legs and connect the other end of the sensor cable to the central computer device. Follow your design ideas and add light, touch or sound sensors as needed. All sensors are labelled according to their functioning.

Complete your robot by making it more aesthetically pleasing. Turn on the computer device and test the robot. This is an initial test, so expect there to be slight problems. Most of the sensors are already programmed, especially the basic walking function.

Program the robots functioning to make it smoother. Attach the USB cable to the robot computer device and to your home computer. Access the computer device by clicking on "Computer" and clicking twice on the drive that becomes the robot computer device. Use the dashboard that appears to better program basic functioning.

Test the robot again. Reprogram walking or other functions as needed based on the test. Try moving the sensors up or down in position if you still do not get correct functioning.
