The LCD monitor is now the standard, in terms of monitors. LCD technology has replaced the CRT technology in today's PC systems. A liquid crystal display screen is comprised of liquid crystals inside of a thin screen that is illuminated by a background light source. While you cannot take an LCD monitor and make it literally transparent, you can use photo-editing software to create an interesting effect, making it appear transparent.

  1. 1

Create an intriguing scene behind the LCD monitor, such as an attractive poster, or other constructed objects. Ensure that they are seen sticking out from behind the LCD monitor.

  2. 2

Move the LCD monitor away from object or objects, as you want a clear, direct view of the object or objects. This will aid you in creating the transparent effect.

  3. 3

Set your digital camera to the highest resolution possible, and take pictures of the objects. You should align the pictures to eye-level from your desk chair. This may be difficult, so take as many pictures as possible, to achieve this.

  4. 4

Replace the LCD monitor, so that you can edit the pictures and finalise the effects.

  5. 5

Open an image editing application, and open the camera images. You will need cropping, gamma contrast and saturation features, in addition to opening the images in full screen mode.

  6. 6

Select the camera image that best matches the object scene behind the monitor.

  7. 7

Crop the image and change the proportions of the image, so that it matches the dimensions of the scene behind the LCD monitor.

  8. 8

Edit the colour of the image, in terms of gamma, contrast and saturation, so that it will fully match the colours of the object scene behind the monitor. This will take a lot of trial and error.

  9. 9

Select the image as the background of your desktop. Right-click it and select "Set as Background" from the drop-down menu. This will make the LCD monitor appear transparent, as it is set against the scenery you chose. The icons on the desktop will appear as if they are floating.
