How to Write My Language Ability on My Resume

The ability to speak more than one language can help your career. Being able to say on your resume that you can speak several languages can impress an employer. You can mention your language ability on several different areas of the resume, highlighting language talent that could help you build relationships with company clients or overseas partners who do not speak English.

    Include your linguistic ability in the overview objectives section of your resume by indicating that a job that could allow you to use your language ability interests you. This indicates to the potential employer that you might fit well in a job that would require language ability. But when applying for a job that obviously does not involve the ability to speak more than one language, do not mention that you would like work that involves your language talent.

    In the education section of your resume, you can detail your foreign language studies in college.

    Note also in the education section of your resume your level of competency in reading and writing and speaking the foreign language, as well as your experience with that language's idiosyncrasies, such as regional dialects, scientific terms and colloquialisms.

    Specify your level of fluency in any foreign language that you list. If you are truly bilingual, emphasise that. If you spoke a second language in the home while growing up, mention that. If you spent considerable time in another country and continually used the second language, tell of that experience.


Tips and warnings

  • Touch on foreign language ability several times throughout the resume, but do not write the resume around your language ability. If you are fluent in two or more languages that are valuable to the company you are applying to, the recruiters will pick up on them without the information being shouted at them.
