How to install a flue pipe in a wood stove
If you have a fireplace with a piped flue, you can easily attach a wood stove. (Jupiterimages/ Images)

Wood stoves are set up so that the smoke of the fire is transferred out of the room through a stove pipe and chimney pipes in various ways such as through a wall or up through the ceiling. If you are fortunate enough to have an open fireplace with a flue pipe running up the bricks, you can set up a stove yourself fairly quickly without the need for a contractor.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Stove pipe
  • Flex pipe
  • Sheet metal screws
  • Drill

  1. 1

Look up in the fireplace and find the lower rim of the flue pipe. You might need to unscrew a metal cover from the top of the fireplace to access the flue pipe. The cover is put in place to force the smoke and air to flow into the pipe instead of up and around it. Unscrew it with the aid of a drill and set the shield and hardware aside.

  2. 2

Slide flex pipe into the flue pipe and attach by drilling sheet metal screws through the pipes where they overlap.

  3. 3

Run the flex tube out of the fireplace at a downward sloped angle. This is better than a right angle that can eventually cause clogs.

  4. 4

Attach stove pipe or insulated chimney pipe to the other end of the flex pipe. Use sheet metal screws. Continue adding pipe until you reach the location of the wood stove.

  5. 5

Connect the pipe to the stove vent with sheet metal screws.

Tips and warnings

  • Wood stoves should sit on a heat-resistant surface such as stone and need to be placed away from walls at the manufacturer's recommended distance.
  • If you have young children in the home, it is better to connect the stove with the insulated chimney pipes rather than the basic stove pipes. The insulated layers keep the outer surface a bit cooler, and there is less risk of burns.
