How to Use Sky DVR Without a Subscription

Updated July 20, 2017

When you first get a Sky+ box (the Sky name for their DVR product), you will be bound to a contrac--typically 12 months. Sky requires you pay a subscription fee to use all the features of your Sky+ box, however, there are still many things you can do with your Sky+ after the subscription contract expires. The Sky features you can use without a subscription are the same as those on Freesat. If you have just moved into a house with a Sky+ box but are not interested in a subscription, you still may be intrigued as to how to use the box.

Turn your TV on and then press the "Power" button on your Sky+ remote control. This will turn your Sky+ box on. The Sky channel will automatically switch on, via the scart connection.

Press "TV Guide" to open your TV guide. Press "Select" with the first option highlighted. This will show you the entire TV guide.

Scroll through channels by pressing the up and down arrows. Scroll through periods of time by pressing the left and right arrows.

Press "Select" when you have found a channel you want to watch. You can use the arrow keys in the same way when watching TV, as you can in the TV guide.

If you want to know which channels are available to you without a subscription, check the Freesat list.
