You can tell whether your GE fluorescent Steel Beam lantern is serviceable by looking at the fluorescent bulb located in the centre of the unit. If the bulb is long and straight, GE did not build your model in a manner that allows you to change the bulb. You should expect to get about four years of service from the bulb, but after the bulb burns out, discarding is the only option. If your lantern has a fluorescent bulb that is short and twisted into a coil, you can service it, using a standard fluorescent bulb designed for a home receptacle.
- Skill level:
Flip the handle down out of your way and grip the very top of the lantern housing with one hand.
Pry the top of the housing off with your hand. It presses into place and secures with a small plastic retaining lip. Be cautious not to break the plastic lip.
Turn the bulb out of the receptacle in a counter-clockwise motion, then place the new bulb into the receptacle clockwise.
Press the top of the lantern back onto the housing.
Tips and warnings
- Double-check the batteries before replacing he bulb. Fluorescent bulbs last a long time, and in most cases, a failure to turn on is a result of drained batteries.
