How to Build an RS232 to RS485 Adapter

RS232 and RS485 cables are both special types of serial cables that enable the connection of serial devices such as printers and scanners, to a device meant to receive the signal, such as a computer. If you have a device with a RS232 port that you need to connect to a RS485 port, you can easily construct a makeshift adaptor cable with the right equipment.

  • RS485 serial cable
  • RS232-to-RS485 connector

Instructions

  1. 1

    Connect one end of your RS232 cable to the RS232 port on your connector.

  2. 2

    Connect one end of your RS485 cable to the RS585 port on your connector. The adaptor cable is now constructed.

  3. 3

    Connect your two incompatible devices by connecting the RS232 end of the cable to your RS232 device, and the RS485 end of the cable to your RS485 device.
