How to Change a 3 Phase Air Compressor to a Single Phase

Updated April 17, 2017

A majority of commercial air compressors are designed with 3-phase motors. This can be a potential issue when it comes to home use as most homes are designed with single-phase power in order to help conserve energy. If you have a commercial air compressor that you wish to make compatible for use in your home, however, you can use a 1-to-3 phase converter to switch the compressor from 3-phase to a single phase.

Turn off the 3-phase power source of the air compressor. This is a safety precaution when working with electricity.

Locate the red, blue and black 3-phase power lines from the air compressor. Connect the black wire to L1, the red wire to L2 and the blue wire to L3 of the 1-to-3 phase converter. Make sure to secure the wires tightly.

Attach the single phase red and black power lines to the 3-phase terminal connections on the 1-to-3 phase converter. Look for a screw-type connection. Tighten with a screwdriver.

Plug the converter into a power source. Doing so will set the air compressor from a 3-phase to a single phase.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench set
  • Rotational 1-to-3 phase converter
  • Screwdriver
