How to write an effective product proposal

Whether you're selling an existing product to a new client or a new product to an existing client, a product proposal (in which you explain the uses and benefits of the product) can help you make the sale more efficiently. However, many businesses waste their time writing product proposals that do not sell their products effectively, weakening their relationships with clients and vendors. To write an effective product proposal, keep a specific procedure in mind.

    Create a proposal theme. This theme serves the same purpose as a thesis statement in an academic essay; it should be the main reason why the potential buyer should purchase your product or service. For example, if you are a gardener, you might make focus on the value that a well-kept garden can add to a home. This should be one of your first sentences, and should be reinforced throughout the proposal.

    Write the body of your proposal. After constructing your theme, skip the introduction for the moment and focus on the body of your proposal, which can be anywhere from one to three pages long, depending on your market. In the body, elaborate upon the many different ways your product can benefit the potential buyer, zeroing in on aspects of the product that emerge from your theme. Make sure to highlight the benefits to your client, rather than the benefits to you or your company.

    Write the proposal's introduction. Return to the beginning of the proposal and work with your theme to construct an introduction. This introduction can include a hook, such as a statistic or interesting quote, and should contain the main ideas you will develop later in the proposal. Make sure to include your theme in the first or second sentence.

    Personalise your proposal. After having constructed a general proposal that you can use to market your product to a variety of people, work through it several times for different clients. For example, your proposal might be different if you are offering to sell a product to a company that specialises in landscape architecture rather than an individual homeowner.

    Format and proofread your proposal. Separate your paragraphs with a space between them to make the proposal readable, and choose a standard font so as not to overwhelm your audience. Check the spelling and grammar of the proposal before sending it; if necessary, have a second or third person read it to ensure that it is error-free.
