A broken door handle on a Mk4 Golf is a headache for any owner. This is an especially frustrating problem if it is the driver's door that you cannot open. In addition, any non-functioning door on the car poses a serious safety risk should you or a passenger need to escape the vehicle immediately. If you notice your door handle has become damaged you need to remove it from your Golf in order to have it replaced.

  1. 1

Check all of the door handles on your Golf to determine which need to be removed. Open up the door that contains the damaged handle. If you cannot open up the door, gain access to it's interior surface by entering another door of the vehicle.

  2. 2

Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws attached to the door handle trim. Lift the door handle away from the door with a trim tool.

  3. 3

Use the screwdriver to remove the mounting screws on the inner door panel. Pull the door panel away from the door with the trim tool. This will give you better access to the two linkage arms of the door handle.

  4. 4

Locate the two linkage arms within the door. Use your fingers to unhook both of the arms from their connectors. Pull them both away from the door.

  5. 5

Remove the remaining parts of the door handle assembly from the door by pulling them away from the door of your Golf with your fingers.
