When you are coming up with a costume for Halloween or a costume contest, consider dressing up as Elvira, or the "Mistress of the Dark." Elvira was the host of a nationally syndicated horror movie talk show and is a cultural icon. Making a homemade Elvira costume can be done by someone with sewing skills.

  1. 1

Use a dress pattern to cut out a sexy Elvira dress. The dress should be long with a plunging neckline. Cut a high slit in the leg of the dress. Cut a jagged hem on the end of the dress and the ends of the sleeves. Hem the ends of the fabric to keep the dress from becoming frayed.

  2. 2

Use a sewing machine to sew the dress together. Your dress should be cut out in two layers, the back and the front. Sew the two sides together, as indicated on the pattern. Use thread that best matches the black of the fabric you're using.

  3. 3

Wear the dress with black pantyhose and black high heels.

  4. 4

Wear a long, black wig that has short fringe across your forehead. The wig also should be rounded at the top. You can do this by teasing the top of the hair and spraying it into place.

  5. 5

Apply Elvira's make-up. Wear pale foundation, lots of black eyeliner and mascara and bright red lipstick.
