Little Red Riding Hood is a classic fairy tale character that young girls will enjoy dressing up as for Halloween or everyday play. You can pair this look with a Big Bad Wolf brother or friend for a classic partner costume. This simple no-sew costume is a practical choice for active young girls, and it will keep them warm on chilly trick-or-treating nights. To keep this costume inexpensive, choose a dress or blouse and skirt that you already own, or purchase them inexpensively at a thrift store.

Instructions

  1. 1

Put on a blouse and skirt or dress for the base of the costume. Classic Little Red Riding Hood looks can include white, black or gingham dresses, or a basic white blouse with a gathered knee-length skirt in red, black, plaid or gingham.

  2. 2

Add knee-high white socks for warmth, or opaque white tights.

  3. 3

Put on any pair of basic black dress shoes. If your child does not have these, you can purchase black fabric Mary Janes very inexpensively at general merchandise stores like Walmart.

  4. 4

Pin the piece of red fabric to the neckline of the hooded sweatshirt using safety pins to create the hooded cape. Place the safety pins on the inside of the sweatshirt so that they will not be visible. Pinch the fabric together as you pin it to create a gathered look. For a more permanent solution, sew the fabric to the sweatshirt with needle and thread instead.

  5. 5

Put on the sweatshirt and add a basket for collecting treats, and your Little Red Riding Hood outfit is complete.

Tips and warnings

  • For added embellishment, glue a strip of white eyelet trim around the edge of the hood with craft glue.
