Door locks are found on nearly every type of door, whether it be interior or exterior. Door handles also can lock, preventing people from coming into the room or house at certain times. Door locks will eventually wear down and need to be replaced. The first step toward replacing a locked door lock is to remove the old lock. You can complete this in a short time with just a few tools and the right instructions.
Locate the screws on the inside of the room on the doorknob. Remove them with a Phillips screwdriver. Unscrew the two screws located on the outside of the door knob.
Slide a flathead screwdriver into the slot along the knob on the inside of the door and pull the inside knob off. Repeat the same process for the outside knob to remove it. Insert a screwdriver into the small slot on the inside of the door knob and pull off the trim ring. Remove the trim ring on the outside.
Loosen the two screws that hold the latch assembly in place on the inside and slip the latch assembly out. Unscrew the two screws holding the latch bolt in place located vertically between the inside and outside of the door and remove the latch bolt and plate.
Clean out the inside to make sure there is no debris or shards of the lock remaining before installing a new lock in its place.
