Hardcover books make an elegant addition to any personal library. However, if you wish to add a touch of personalisation to your books to help in identification, you can do better than scribbling your name on the inside cover. Instead, you can use gold stamping to emboss the cover and add a sophisticated identifying mark that enhances the look of the book, rather than takes away from it.

  1. 1

Place a piece of wood on your workspace. Open the hardcover book and place just the cover onto the wood scrap, face side up.

  2. 2

Wipe the cover of the book with a damp sponge in the area you will be stamping. Lay out your leather stamps spelling the name you will stamp. Use a ruler to adjust and align the spacing between each stamp.

  3. 3

Tap each stamp with a rubber mallet firmly but gently. Make sure each stamp is tapped evenly. Lift the stamps away and check if they're defined and even. Place the stamps back down if they need to be adjusted.

  4. 4

Dip your paintbrush into the jar of gold leather dye, then paint into the embossed stamping on the book cover. Make sure not to overfill the embossed lettering and to stay within the grooves. Close the cover of the book and allow the gold dye to completely dry overnight before using the book or putting it away.
