Exchange report data in different formats gives software developers a flexible way to integrate user data into database applications. In Visual Basic .NET, the standard reporting tool is Crystal Reports. Crystal Reports program can convert a Microsoft Data Report (".dsr" file) to a Crystal Report (".rpt" file) automatically. When a Data Report is converted, an equivalent Crystal Report is generated. The resulting report has the same design and data access as the original report. Setting up "dsr" report as an object inside of the Crystal Reports executable file allows you to translate ".dsr" files to ".rpt" files in order to use features of the Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET software.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Open Visual Studio .NET Solution Explorer. Right-click your project file to display the shortcut menu.

  2. 2

Select "Add," and then click "Add New Item."

  3. 3

Select "Crystal Report" from the "Templates" area in the "Add New Item" box. Click "Open."

  4. 4

Select "From an Existing Report" in the Crystal Report Gallery, and then click "OK."

Select "MS Data Report" from the "Files of Type" field. Locate the data report with the extension ".dsr" that you want to translate to the ".rpt" report.

  5. 5

Click "File" followed by "Save" in the "Crystal Report Designer" to save your ".rpt" report.
