  1. 1

Install a multi-gas detector in your basement. A multi-gas detector looks similar to a fire detector, but it measures gas levels in your home. Place the detector by your gas furnace; this is the most likely source of a methane gas leak. You can also place one in your kitchen, another location where you can experience a gas leak. This type of detector works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is the best solution for the average homeowner.

  2. 2

Contact your gas company if you suspect a small leak. The gas company has specialised detectors that can read levels and locate where the gas is coming from. This is also a good idea if you suspect a gas leak outside your home where normal detectors will not work. If you feel the gas leak is an emergency, contact your local fire brigade to measure for a leak.

  3. 3

Measure for methane using a methane laser gun, which allows you to measure for methane from a distance of 500 feet. This tool is used by professionals when a leak has been detected but not located. The laser gun allows you to pinpoint a leaking pipe in a tight area that you can't safely access.
