Users using DVRs and other network devices can access their DVR over the Internet using their router's IP address. However, many Internet service providers occasionally change their clients' IP addresses. When this happens, users have to get the new IP address and access the DVR there. With DDNS, users access their DVR at an address such as "my-router.example-ddns.com." When the router's IP address changes, it updates the DDNS site.

Access your router's web-based configuration page by typing its address -- often "http://192.168.0.1/" -- into your web browser's address bar and pressing "Enter." See your router's documentation for its default IP address if this IP address doesn't work.
Log in to your router using its user name and password. If you haven't set up a custom user name or password, try "admin" as the user name and a blank password, or a blank user name and "admin" as the password. See your router's documentation for its default password and user name.
Navigate to your router's DDNS configuration page. Look under "Tools" and "DDNS" or "Dynamic DDNS."
Click the "Enabled" option.
Click the "Server Address" box and select your DDNS service by clicking it in the list. If you don't have a DDNS service, select any DDNS service your router supports, type its address into your web browser's address bar and sign up for a free account on its website.
Type the name of your DDNS site such as "my-router.example-ddns.com" into the "Host Name" box.
Type your DDNS service account user name into the "User Name" box and its password into the "Password" box.
Click the "Apply" or "Save" button.
Tips and warnings
- You can't access your DVR from the Internet until you set up port forwarding on your router. See your router's manual for information on setting up port forwarding and your DVR's manual for the ports it uses.
