The obvious answer to the question of how to determine how heavy a steel plate is to weigh the plate. However, that will often not be possible. The plate may be too big to move, or may sit in a vital spot. In this case, as long as you know the dimensions of the plate, you can find the approximate weight using a calculating program such as Microsoft Excel.

Measure the height, length and breadth of the plate with a tape measure. Double-check your data to ensure accuracy.

Open Excel. Enter the height of the plate in cell A1, the length of the plate in cell A2 and the breadth of the plate in cell A3.

Convert all dimensions to meters if necessary. If cell A1 is in inches, then in cell B1, enter "=A1
