The plate may be too big to move, or may sit in a vital spot. Measure the height, length and breadth of the plate with a tape measure. Double-check your data to ensure accuracy.
Open Excel. Enter the height of the plate in cell A1, the length of the plate in cell A2 and the breadth of the plate in cell A3.
Convert all dimensions to meters if necessary. If cell A1 is in inches, then in cell B1, enter "=A10.0254." If A1 is in feet, in cell B1 enter "=A10.3040." If cell A1 is in centimetres, then in cell B1 enter "=a1*0.01." Do the same for cells A2 and A3.
Find the volume. If A1, A2 and A3 appear in meters, then in cell A4 enter "=a1a2a3." Otherwise, in cell B4 enter "=B1B2B3."
Multiply the results by the density of steel. Although different types of steel have different densities, an approximate value is 7850kg/cubic meter. So, in cell A5 or B5 enter either "=A47850" or "=B47850."
Convert to pounds, if desired. If you want the result in pounds instead of kilograms, then in cell A6 or B6 enter "=A5/2.2" or "=B5/2.2."
