If you're brave enough to do it, cutting your own hair is a simple task. Using a few tricks, you can cut your fringe or some face-framing layers without the expense or time involved in going to a salon. Go slow and remember, it's always best to err on the side of not cutting enough than cutting too much.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Leave-in conditioner
- Spray bottle of water
- Ponytail holder
- Haircutting scissors
Wash your hair and towel dry. Spray with leave in conditioner and comb your hair. Have a spray bottle of water handy to keep your fringe damp as you work.
Divide the front of your hair from the rest in a triangle shape. The top point of the triangle is on top of your head. How far back depends on how thick you want your fringe. For best results, do not start your fringe further back than your ears. The side points of the triangle should be even with your eyebrows. Comb this hair straight forward and pull the rest back into a ponytail out of your way.
Hold a section of your fringe between your forefinger and middle finger on your non-dominant hand at the length you want the fringe to be. Trim beneath your fingers. Repeat across, making the fringe even. Make sure to trim under your fingers, making your fringe longer than you want them to be to allow for shortening when they dry.
Make small vertical cuts along the edge of your fringe to make the cut less blunt.
Wash your hair and towel dry it. You want it to be damp.
Comb your hair, spraying in some leave-in conditioner if necessary. Bend forward at the waist and comb your hair straight forward into a ponytail just above your forehead. Make sure you hair is smooth or your cut won't be even. Secure the ponytail loosely with a ponytail holder.
Pull the ponytail holder down the length of the ponytail to about an inch above the place where you want to cut. The more you cut, the shorter your front layers will be. Wrap the ponytail tight to secure your hair at this point.
Cut your hair straight across under the ponytail holder.
Remove the ponytail holder and style your hair as desired.
