How to protect a carpet from heavy furniture

Updated February 21, 2017

Heavy furniture can crush carpet piling, leaving noticeable indentations behind when you move the furniture. Returning the carpet piling to its original upright position can require special cleaning techniques. Homeowners can protect a carpet from heavy furniture with inexpensive furniture gliders. The gliders help distribute the weight of the furniture, instead of concentrating it all on the ends of the thinner furniture legs.

Purchase enough furniture gliders or furniture leg caps to install on all the legs of your heavy furniture.

Press the furniture gliders or caps over the legs of each piece of furniture.

Move the heavy pieces of furniture over at least 3 inches once a month to allow the carpet underneath to recover. The gliders will make the furniture easier to slide around without tipping.
