Murder Mystery Clue Ideas for Parties
It was Ms. Scarlett with the revolver in the ballroom. (hindurchgeblickt image by fuxart from

Professor Plum was spotted in the ballroom brandishing a dull lead pipe, but Ms. Scarlett was in the kitchen with a knife. Keep your guests guessing the identity of the murderer with a Clue-themed murder mystery party. Assume the role of your favourite character from the board game and engage your guests in a night filled with fun, food and a bit of murder.

Classic Clue

Decide the perpetrator, weapon and location of the murder such as Mrs. White with the pistol in the garden. Send out invitations to each guest telling them which character they will play. Provide a short biography of the characters, either replicating them from the game, movie or your own imagination. Also provide each player with a location in your house, the name of another guest and a weapon that was not used in the murder. When your guests arrive inform them that they have all the information they need to solve the murder, as long as they work together. Encourage the guests to trade information back and forth throughout the evening until one player can successfully guess the who, what and where of the crime. Each player is allowed one guess before they are disqualified from solving the murder.

Killer Guests

Don't have your guests solve a murder, have them "commit" murder. Send invitations to each guest that includes the name of the character they will play as well as a weapon, a location in your house and the name of another character. Instruct your guests to manipulate the character they've been assigned to enter the room they've been given while the "killer" has the weapon in his possession. Keep all the "weapons," such as toy guns, plastic knives, a piece of rope and a wrench, on a table in the entryway of your home. Engage in party games to keep players moving to different rooms until one player commits the murder and wins the evening.

Friend or Foe

Add a twist to the game. After sending out invitations with your guest's character and a who, what and where that was not used in the murder, split guests into teams of two. Instruct each team to work together to solve the murder. Offer a small cash or gift card prize for the winning team. However, inform the teams that if one member betrays their partner by luring them into a room alone and "using" a weapon at the party to "kill" them, the prize goes to the survivor. This will keep your guests wary of each other throughout the evening.
