Elastic headbands for babies can easily be made in a variety of colours and styles. With just a few basic craft supplies, you can make baby headbands for your baby or as a thoughtful gift for baby showers or baby's first birthday. Natural cotton elastic is used for the headband, as this material is soft, stretchy and comfortable for the baby to wear. Choose from a variety of fabric colours and decorative elements like buttons, beads or silk flowers to sew on top.

  1. 1

Measure your baby's head with the soft measuring tape. Multiply this measurement by 1.5, rounding to the nearest 1/4 inch. This will become the length of your fabric strip.

  2. 2

Cut the length of fabric with the rotary cutter to the length calculated in Step 1. Cut the fabric 2 1/4 inches wide. If you don't have a rotary cutter, you can use scissors for this step.

  3. 3

Cut the cotton elastic 1/2 inch shorter than the measurement of the baby's head.

  4. 4

Fold one side of the fabric strip over 1/2 inch and press down with the iron, being careful not to use steam. Fold the other side 1/2 inch toward the centre and press down with the iron. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and press with the iron.

  5. 5

Stitch down the length of each side of the fabric, leaving 1/2 inch unstitched on one end. You should now have a fabric "tube."

  6. 6

Attach the safety pin to one end of the elastic strip and close the safety pin. Hold the non-safety-pinned end of elastic in one hand and, with the other hand, thread the safety pin through the fabric "tube," pulling it out on the other end.

  7. 7

Overlap the elastic ends by 1/2 inch. Stitch and back stitch the elastic ends twice.

  8. 8

Fold the fabric end that has 1/2 inch unstitched inside of itself by 1/2 inch. Push the other end of the fabric inside and stitch over both sides.

Tips and warnings

  • If you are making the elastic headband as a gift for someone else, make the headband about 13 inches for a newborn and 15 inches for an older baby.
  • Add decorative elements like beads, buttons or silk flowers with a simple hand stitch to the top of the headband.
