How to Remove a Fluorescent Tube Cover

Updated April 17, 2017

Fluorescent tube covers are used to cover fluorescent light bulb fixtures that are mounted to the ceiling. The covers can be used to reduce the harsh glare of the fluorescent light by softening the light. They are also used as tube guards to protect the fluorescent light bulb from breaking. The cover must be removed in order to change the bulb, socket or the ballast of the light fixture. Use caution when removing the cover because improper removal can damage the cover or cause the bulb to break.

Turn off the light switch to the fluorescent light if it is on. Take this as a safety precaution to prevent electrical shock while handling the light fixture.

Position a ladder under the fluorescent light fixture and ensure the ladder is stable and secure on the floor before climbing. Use a stable chair if you do not have a ladder.

Examine the light fixture and locate the screws or retaining clips holding the tube cover in place.

Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws if the cover is held in place with screws and slide the cover off the light fixture. Pull the clips toward you and ease the cover off of the fixture if you are removing a tube cover that is secured by clips.
