How to build an outboard engine stand

An outboard engine stand serves several purposes aside from keeping the outboard engine in an upright position. Mounting an outboard motor becomes less challenging if the motor is on a stand. Moving an outboard motor from vertical to horizontal can become a safety hazard due to the weight of it. Outboard motors can exceed 135kg (300 pounds). Another function of an outboard motor stand is storage during times when the outboard engine is not being used. An outboard engine stand also aids in the drainage of condensation and fluids during routine maintenance.

Measure the transom of the boat paying attention to the thickness. The thickness of the outboard engine stand's mounting brace corresponds with the thickness of the transom. The mounting brace is the portion of the outboard engine stand upon which the outboard motor is mounted.

Measure the distance from the outboard engine mount to the ground. Ensure the measurement is taken while the outboard engine is on the boat. Measure the width of the outboard engine. Record both the height and width. Measure out the dimensions on the plywood and mark the plywood for cutting. Cut the plywood according to the recorded dimensions. Due to the thinness of the plywood, cut additional pieces with the same measurements. Transfer the height measurements onto the 50 by 100 mm (2 by 4 inch) lumber. Cut the lumber according to the measurements.

Align the plywood cut specifically for the mounting brace horizontally on the ground. The other pieces sit beside the mounting bracket vertically. Apply carpenter's glue to each piece of plywood and fasten them together with the wood screws. Place the 50 by 100 mm (2 by 4 inch) boards on opposite sides of the freshly created mounting brace. Apply carpenter's glue along each side and secure the joints with wood screws.

Apply clamps to the various joints and allow the glue to dry for approximately 24 hours.

Lift the dried pieces of lumber and rest them against a car engine stand. Locate bolt holes on the car engine stand. Drill through the bolt holes and into the plywood 12 mm (1/2 inch).

Place 75 mm (3 inch) bolts with washers into the bolt holes, passing through the plywood and the car engine stand. Secure the bolts and washers on the opposite side of the bolt holes with a nut. Tighten the bolt with a wrench.
