A taper pin is used to secure two parts together. Typically. a taper pin is used to secure two sections or sizes of metal together, such as a shaft and universal joint. Installing a taper pin may require enlarging the hole for the taper pin. This is done by using a taper pin reamer. Once the hole for the taper pin has been prepared, you can then install the pin.

Instructions

  1. 1

Attach the taper pin reamer bit to the power drill. Apply cutting fluid to the end of the reamer.

  2. 2

Insert the reamer into the pin hole. Pull the trigger on the drill and push the reamer slowly into the hole.

  3. 3

Drill for 10 to 15 seconds at a time. Remove the drill, and insert the taper pin to check the depth of the hole. Continue drilling if the taper pin does not slide easily into the hole.

  4. 4

Wipe the inside of the enlarged hole with a clean cloth or rag to remove any metal shavings.

  5. 5

Place the two parts to join together and align the pin holes.

  6. 6

Insert the taper pin into the enlarged hole. Tap on the pin with a hammer until it is flush or even with the surface. If the pin is larger than the hole, you can cut the end off with a reciprocating saw.

Tips and warnings

  • Use a larger taper pin reamer bit if the hole is not large enough.
  • If the taper pin has a threaded end you may need to add a nut onto the end.
  • Wear eye goggles to protect yourself from metal shavings.
