How to Make Metal Frames for Lampshades
The best way to match your design is by making your own lampshade. (Lampshade with Varicolored Stone and Lace image by Astroid from

While there are myriad lampshades available in the market today, finding one that fits exactly into the interior design of a room sometimes means making one that does. It can also be a fun activity where everyone in the family can join in for some quality bonding time. The lampshade described here is one with a 6-inch top and a 10-inch base, but these measurements can be changed according to what is needed.

  1. 1

Cut five pieces of wire, each measuring 13 inches. A 14-inch gauge wire is ideal because it is strong and still pliable enough to manipulate with little effort. Use the tip of round-nose pliers to make a hook at one end of the first 13-inch wire. Start making the hook at about 1/2 inch from the end to make it easier to work with. Make a hook at the other end as well. This makes a 12-inches tall metal lamp frame. Perform this step with the four remaining 13-inch wires.

  2. 2

Cut two more pieces of the 14-gauge wire to measure 15 inches each. Twist the ends of the two wires together with the pliers. Do this until about 2 inches of both ends are twisted together. Now make a hook at the other end of each wire. This piece later joins to the top and base of the lamp shade frame.

  3. 3

Make a U-shape with the joined wires. Just beneath the twisted sections of the U-shaped wires, squeeze them together slightly. Separate the two wires slightly, according to the specifications of the light-bulb to be used. This later holds the light bulb.

  4. 4

Hook each 13-inch wire to the 6-inch metal craft ring. Space them evenly from each other. Slightly squeeze each hook to close them over the metal craft ring. Then, hook each of the 13-inch metal wires to the 10-inch metal craft ring. Again, space them evenly before securing them to the 10-inch metal craft ring.

  5. 5

Hook the ends of the U-shaped wires to the 6-inch metal craft ring. Make sure it falls into the centre of the metal frame. If a taller shade than 12 inches is needed, add a centre craft ring between the top and the base for more support. The centre ring can be attached to the support wires with a 24-gauge wire. Wrap the 24-gauge wire to the support wires in a figure 8 formation for more security.
