The registry is a part of the Windows operating system. The registry stores information about locations of various programs, changes made and other reference information needed by the operating system. Bits of information stored in the registry are known as registry keys. When an application is deleted, it may leave behind passwords, shortcuts and other data. These unwanted registry keys can be located and removed. However, Microsoft does not offer a system utility for removing hidden registry keys. There are many free, safe applications that can remove hidden registry keys.
