As a member of the animated series, "The Flintstones," Betty is Barney's wife and Wilma's best friend. With her trademark blue dress and black hair, Betty Rubble is an iconic cartoon character whose popularity has spanned decades. Children and adults alike can enjoy dressing up as Betty for Halloween, either alone or with a group of fellow Flintstones. Although Betty Rubble costumes are sold in stores, you can also make a costume at home with a few easily acquired items.

  1. 1

Find or purchase a blue strapless dress. If you already have a blue dress with straps or sleeves, cut off the sleeves and shoulder section of the dress to create a strapless dress. Lay the dress down. Cut the bottom hem of the dress into jagged points.

  2. 2

Cut a piece of black fabric into a 2-inch wide strip. Pin one end of the fabric to the centre of the dress. Wrap the fabric around your neck, and mark the spot where the fabric meets the top of the dress. Add an inch to that length. Remove the dress and the fabric from your body. Cut off the excess length from the fabric.

  3. 3

Turn the dress inside out. Place one end of the black fabric onto the centre of the front of the dress. Layer the other end of the fabric over it. Sew the fabric to the dress, either by hand or with a sewing machine.

  4. 4

Turn the dress right side out. Pin a white, circular brooch to the centre of the top of the dress.

  5. 5

Purchase a black, shoulder-length wig from a local or online retail store. Tie a blue ribbon around a hair pin and into a bow. Pin the ribbon to the top of the wig. Complete the costume with a pair of sandals.
